On 12 October, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Novak presented the Global Energy Prize to the 2023 laureates. They were scientists from the People's Republic of China: Zhong Lin Wang, founding director of the Beijing Institute of Nanoenergy and Nanosystems, and Zhuzhu Wang, professor, director of the Institute of Refrigeration and Cryogenics at Shanghai Transport University.
The ceremony took place at the Russian Energy Week International Forum.
The event was also attended by the Chairman of the International Global Energy Prize Committee, Nobel Laureate Rae Kwon Chung (Korea) and President of the Global Energy Association Sergey Brilev.
Laureate Zhong Lin Wang was awarded the prize in the category "Non-conventional Energy" for his invention of triboelectric nanogenerators as a new energy technology for autonomous systems, the Internet of Things, robotics, artificial intelligence and large-scale blue energy harvesting.
Laureate Zhuzhu Wang was selected in the New Energy Applications category for his research on sorption refrigeration, which significantly improved the technology of utilising low-grade thermal energy to create high-efficiency cooling, and for his significant contribution to the development of a desiccant-based heat pump that doubled the energy efficiency of cooling and heating.
During the ceremony, the Association's Diploma of Honour was also awarded to a foreign scientist. The winner of this award was Ljubivoje Popović (Serbia), who gave his life to the Belgrade Distribution Grid Company. The diploma was awarded to him for the development of a methodology that allows determining the appropriate characteristics of high-voltage and extra-high-voltage cable lines.
